Have you ever thought that corn water would make a good drink? I hadn't (but now I really do!)
So my tea obsession is becoming apparent to my whole office and the other day one of my colleagues comes over and presents me with some new tea to try - 'corn tea'.
“It tastes just like water that you've cooked corn in, it's great!"
Safe to say this description did not convince me! But I took the teabag home to give it a try!
What is Okusu-cha?
Okusu-cha, or Corn Tea as it would be known in English, is not technically a tea - it is essentially is boiled corn water. Often consumed in winter and autumn in Korea, the tea can be served hot or cold and is essentially made by roasting corn kernels and then boiling in water.
How does it taste?
The tea from my colleague was in a tea bag, meaning that rather than containing whole corn kernels, the corn was crushed to make it quicker to brew (and also I presume to fit in the tea bag better!)
I decided to brew the tea pot in my glass tea pot rather than in a mug so I could see the color better (note-to-self to invest in a glass mug!)
The tea has a nice color to it, and on first sip, my friend was right, it tastes exactly how I would imagine water that you have cooked corn in to taste!
Bizarrely though, it really works!
The tea is very smooth to drink, and I could honestly see it being one of those quite addictive flavors! It was really easy to drink and quite a soothing drink - and I think it definitely makes a great tea for the afternoon and evening when you want to avoid a caffeine hit!
I am surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this tea, and it is definitely something I would drink again!
