Review: 'Death in the Spotlight' by Robin Stevens

'and with this kiss I die' - when Shakespeareas great tragedy brings tragedy to the Rue Theatre, Daisy and Hazel must once again race against time and the police, to solve the murder before anyone else gets hurt.

This is another great book in the Detective Society series. Hazel and Daisy, upon their return from Hong Kong, find themselves staying with the mysterious Uncle Felix, his wife Lucy and their `maid` Bridget in London.

Busy with the latest crisis, Uncle Felix and Aunt Lucy send the girls to the famous Rue Theatre, believing a small part in the latest show - Romeo & Juliet - will be the best way to keep the girls out of trouble, until they return to Deepdean. Of course - keeping two young detectives out of mischief is never easy, as misfortune and misadventure seem to follow them around! As the Rue Theatre struggles from mounting pressures - with cast members falling ill from the flu - things begin to take a turn for the worst. Bickers between the cast mount into blazing arguments and the star of the show, Rose, finds herself receiving threats - from ominous messages to violent death threats. And when disaster strikes, the girls once again find themselves at the heart of a mystery and racing against the police to solve the murder. In traditional style, Daisy and Hazel must battle against the interference of the grownups, who - on the most part - are determined to keep then out of trouble and away from the murder. Stevens once again creates an exciting world of intrigue. Its great seeing how the characters - Daisy and Hazel - continue to grow, and how their time in Hong Kong has changed the balance in their relationship and given Hazel more confidence to assert herself and take on adventures. As the girls have grown up - it is also interesting to see how romance begins to play more of a role. Not only do we see a changing relationship between Hazel and Alexander, but a love interest for Daisy - in the form of the actress Martina. The way Stevens introduces Daisy's first crush is really well written, and it nicely touches on LGBT - showing the idiocy of the laws in that time and how love can grow. Another fantastic addition to the most unladylike murders - and I look forward to their next adventure on their return to Deepdean!

Synopsis Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong are off to the beautiful Rue Theatre in London, where they will face an entirely new challenge: acting. But behind the theatres glittering facade, the girls soon realise that there is trouble at the Rue. Jealousy, threats and horrible pranks quickly spiral out of control - and then one of the cast is found dead. As opening night looms closer, Hazel and Daisy must take centre stage and solve the crime - before the killer strikes again.
